When you think of Malibu, you probably think glamorous beach front properties, celebrities, and glitzy parties. Yet, for our Founder and Creative Director, Francesca Aiello, growing up in Malibu was much edgier and adventurous than that. Think -- skateboarding to the beach holding a grocery bag of snacks, sand always stuck to your skin, surfing in only a bikini, and not coming home till after the sun sets.
This is the real Malibu that Francesca Aiello envisioned into our newest collection. Miss Malibu juxtaposes the California girl aesthetic with the surf punk lifestyle. This is the authentic Malibu, reimagined into swimwear and apparel.
For this collection, Francesca teamed up with artist and childhood best friend, Alana O’Herlihy, to create Alana Blue, a collage print that tells the story of their experience growing up in Malibu. The print features gritty, punk imagery and even Alana and Francesca's Malibu Middle School ID photos.
Alana Blue arrives in our glistening shine fabric. The Alana Blue pieces also feature heart and star shaped diamanté details. The graphic print can be found on some of our top selling swim pieces like the Tia top and Tia bottom.
Francesca decided to shoot the campaign for Miss Malibu in Malibu, on the beach where she grew up. The collection is heavily influenced by the early 00s swimwear trends that Francesca followed long before Frankies Bikinis existed. Playful prints like our hibiscus Sand Sugar and our starry Luna print are reminiscent of the colorful prints that made Francesca fall in love with bikinis in the first place. The skimpy silhouettes in Miss Malibu like the Pam top and the Marina bottom tie back to similar designs Francesca created during the genesis of Frankies in 2012.
Francesca says, “I’ve always been inspired by my upbringing in Malibu which is what really brought the Miss Malibu concept to life. Laying on the beach between surf sessions, salt in my hair and sand in my toes, skateboarding home at sunset with my surfboard under my arm.”
Miss Malibu swimwear arrives alongside a new range of apparel pieces debuting in matching prints and fabrics. One of Francesca's favorite pieces from Miss Malibu is the America dress, crafted in shine fabric and designed with a low V-neck, a comfortable halter back, and a flowing mermaid-like skirt to finish.
Another one of Francesca's favorite apparel pieces from this collection is the Noah mini skirt, a ready to wear skirt designed with an adjustable buckle strap and dainty front and back pockets as an added finish. Noah pairs perfectly with any of our utility swim tops.
Along with our Gumdrop utility apparel comes our Luna print apparel pieces, which feature white star and moon imagery across a purple sky. Luna print is designed on our softest terry fabric and debuts on some of our signature shapes like the Rose romper and the Harlow top.
The pieces from Miss Malibu are versatile, made for any summer activities, and to be worn whenever and wherever the day might take you.
